You can’t underestimate the importance of having a really good product photography kit when it comes to boosting your sales on eBay. A badly lit, poorly focused photo taken against dodgy a background is seriously going to lose you customers or get you lower bids. You need your products to stand out and look good if you are going to get customers to click through and read your listing.
To get your products looking good you need a decent home photography studio kit to enable you to take more professional photographs and we’ve been searching to put together what we consider an ideal kit. The first thing we wanted to do was make sure we were not spending a fortune. There are some outstanding cameras out there that will cost you an arm and a leg. For eBay product photography you don’t need a Canon EOS 5D Mark III but you do need a good camera, a versatile lightbox, a sound tripod and excellent quality editing software. So, here’s our spec.
The ultimate reasonably priced camera kit for eBay photography – Nikon D3200 with 18 -55 mm lens
For a high quality entry level DSLR that would have outperformed many professional cameras only a few years ago, this is a very reasonably priced camera indeed. Boasting a 24.4 mega pixel resolution and the new DX format CMOS image sensor you’d be hard pushed to find another camera in this price range that would guarantee hi-res images which will look super-sharp when enlarged by customers clicking on you item. It is an easy to use entry level DSLR with a range of features such as true continuous 11 point autofocus, a bright 3-inch display that works well in direct sunlight, and offers easily navigable menus and instructions – for example, if you change the aperture size an illustration appears showing the blades extend and retract as you change the setting, as well as the effect you’re having on aperture as you zoom in and out. There’s even a mode which shows you how to achieve certain shots. It comes complete will an 18-55mm lens and other lenses are available if you want to buy them.
Finally, when you’ve finished your eBay photos you can use it for taking your family pics – it even takes full HD videos!

Complete Photography Accessory Pack
You don’t need to be flash with your accessory pack, you just need good quality essentials at a reasonable price. Here we’ve found one that contains: a full sized, lightweight tripod, a decent camera case, a table tripod which always comes in useful for eBay shots, a memory card storage wallet, a five piece camera cleaning kit, screen protectors for the LCD and a microfibre cleaning cloth for the lens. All of this for £19.99 GBP or $23.99 USD. Very good for the price.
Easily store all your eBay product photos on this memory card
You’ll need a decent sized memory card to save all your fantastic images on so you can import them on to your computer for editing. However, you don’t need to spend a fortune on these as the prices have come down dramatically over the last few years. You may even have one knocking around the house somewhere. If you haven’t, have a look here at the disk we have chosen. It retails at £9.99 UK and $15.95 US and at 16GB will stores tons of high res photos.
Perfect Lightbox for eBay Product Photographs
As I mentioned in a previous article Massively improve your eBay photography with a cheap lightbox, even the sharpest of eBay pictures can look naff if the lighting is poor. A lightbox is an essential feature to make sure you have a shadowless, well it product set against a background that will make your products stand out, whether it be plain or a set piece background. The model we’ve found is 24″ by 24″ which should be ample room for most things, though there are cheaper smaller ones and more expensive large ones available. The package includes:
- 100% pure white nylon fabric and stainless steel frame photographic light tent.
- mini tripod stand
- exclusive carry, case which can also carry the tripod and one set of mini lights
- 2 x daylight effect lights with fold away stands. Daylight effect
- 4 x Colour base backgrounds
- 1 Year Ex-Pro Warranty
Again we’ve looked for very reasonable pricing and have found similar items in the UK and USA for £49.97 GBP and $60.09 USD, which we think is very good value indeed.
Esssential eBay Photography Software
Photo editing software is an indispensable necessity for any eBay seller. You need to be able to fix blemishes, change colour and saturation and adjust brightenss and contrast as well as being able to crop or resize your image.
The other way software can be used is to put two photographs side by side and combine them into a singe image thus reducing your fees for eBay listing. There are lots of other things you can do too – special and artistic effects and multiple layering, just to name a few.
It’s no secret that one of the market leaders in software is Adobe Photoshop which is used by professional photographers the world over. However, the complete package is very much on the pricey side and, to be honest, many of its more technical features are not that relevant to someone wanting to take eBay photographs and make their home photos look good. They do, however, sell a version called Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 – which is basically a lite version that won’t overburden your computer but will still allow you to do all the things mentioned above, plus a whole lot more. And whilst the full version comes in at a whopping £600 (Amazon.co.uk) and $600 (Amazon.com) the best priced version of the Phtotoshop Elements we found was £32.99 (Amazon.co.uk) $62.40 (Amazon.com). (Financially savvy people in North America might find it more useful to sign up for Amazon.co.uk and download it from there, saving yourself an extra $11 – though not sure if it is possible.)
